So, the Eastern Conference is going to be tight then?
With all 4 matchup's now through game 1 we have seen 1 overtime game and 3 shut outs, the latest being in the Boston Bruins / Montreal Canadiens match up - this one not going the way i would have expected.
Boston Bruins 0 v 2 Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens got off to a flyer in this game, going 1-0 up through a Brian Gionta goal. An innocent dump into the zone wasn't cleared effectively by the Bruins and puck was fired across ice by Gomez to find Gionta open in front of the net and he shot past Thomas who stood no chance.
From that moment Montreal went into defense mode with the Bruins racking up 31 shots on the night including 18 2nd period attempts. Price and his defense held firm as Price racked up his 3rd ever playoff shut out, his other 2 also being against the Boston Bruins. Montreal knew if the collapsed to the net and kept Boston to shots from the outside they would stand a chance with Price between the pipes.
Brian Gionta added his 2nd goal of the game off of a 2nd Gomez feed at 16.42 in the 3rd to effectively kill off the game. Lucic lost the puck to Gomez in his own zone who dropped a back hand feed to the on coming Gionta. He blasted it at net and despite Thomas getting a bit of the puck he failed to keep it out of the net.
San Jose 3 v 2 LA Kings (OT)
San Jose got off to the perfect start to the series, winning game 1 albeit via an overtime winner from Pavelski and a perfect start to the game, going 1-0 up after 28 seconds.
It was Dany Heatley who got the Sharks going, taking a centering pass from Clowe and putting the puck inside the right hand post of Quick.
San Jose dominated the 1st period outshooting the Kings 14-3 and blanking them on 2 Powerplay chances as well.
The Kings then came to life in the 2nd period with Dustin Brown firing in an equaliser on the PP at 7.25.
La Coture put the Sharks back in the lead at 10.23, skating in on Quick and putting the puck between his pads.
16.20 saw Williams, just back from injury bringing the Kings level for the second time in the period capatilising on a mistake by the Sharks in their own zone.
San Jose outshot LA 45-35 and in the end that showed as the game remained tied through the 3rd and deep into the first overtime period, Pavelski stepped up to give the Sharks the game winning goal.
Picking up a feed from Wellwood he put the puck gloveside on Quick from the circles to send the San Jose fans into raptures.
Both LA Kings goals came on bad plays from the Sharks - they will need to cut out those mistakes for the remainder of the series or it could undo them in games.
